Sphere: SGCI 2015 (Part 3)

A sign outside of UTK's Art & Architecture Building
The third day of SGCI 2015 was packed with demos schedule at the Art and Architecture Building on the UTK campus.
The first demo I went to was the Photo Litho Plates: Not Just for Photo Anymore, presented by Carolyn Muskat and Kate Goyette of Muskat Studios. As I'd had no experience in lithography (and we don't have the right facility to do stone lithograph at UNR), I wanted to see this demo for an alternative method for lithography that I can consider using for later.

The second demo that I went to was 3-Ring Circuits: Creating Interactive Sculptures with Paper Circuits Erik Waterkotte and Heather Freeman (University of North Carolina, Charlotte) and Ryan Buyssens (University of Central Florida, Orlando). The demo consisted of demonstration on creating paper circuit sculptures by integrating basic 3-D digital modeling, screenprint, and circuit design.

Erin and I also had a chance to check the  INK Version 2.0: The Creative Potential Of Advanced Ink Technologies demo by Brian Gonzales from the Illegitimate Press. He was discussing and demonstrating thermochromic (heat/temperature sensitive), photochromic (UV sensitive), hydrochromic (color change activate by water), liquid crystal, and conductive inks. It was really amazing to see such technology was applying to fine art. However, the cost for those inks are still very high, I hope to be able to experiment with them sometime in the future.

Erin and I also attended the Another Sphere: Alternative Papermaking demo by Amanda Berry, Kendall College of Art and Design. We now know how to use food to create different colors/textures (sometimes smell) to our own paper!

Through out the day, I had the chance to tour some of the on-going exhibits in the Art & Architecture Building such as CNTRL+P: Printmaking in the 21st Century by University of Tennessee Alumni at Ewing Gallery, Ungraspable: Walter Jule, Printworks at Gallery 103B, SGCI Student Fellowship Exhibitions: Kaitlyn Gesel and Izzy Jarvis, The Wrocław School of Printmaking – 2015, Scandinavian Spheres: Norwegian Printmakers at SGC International 2015, Circumference and Radius: C=2πR= Economies of Distance, and the SGCI Member Exchange Portfolio. Here are pictures of some of my favorite work:

At night, we went to the Pilot Light for the Printmakers’ Talent Show and saw some amazing performances by other printmakers there. The place was really packed. I spent some time talking with some of my UNT folks and also got introduced to other friends from other schools. Overall, it was great being social and making new friends.
